Dr. Antonne Zagone wore his bird beak mask for each one of his bubonic plague patients! The purpose of the mask was to keep away bad smells, known as miasma, which were thought to be the principal cause of the disease. Filling the beak with dried flowers, herbs, camphor, or a vinegar sponge, the doctor believed he could protect himself from the plague. Unfortunately, even a concoction of juniper berry, ambergris, cloves, and myrrh wasn't enough to save him. As Dr. Zagone wore the mask so much, it gradually became a part of his face, with the infection taking over his flesh, rotting away at his ever gruesome beak, his body, and soul.

Mask comes with elastic strap. Sculpted by Pete Infelise.
